Aqua Velva Ice Blue was launched in 1935 by the JB Williams Company. The Aqua Velva brand made its first appearance in 1917. The brand is now owned by Combe Inc.

Aqua Velva Ice Blue was a popular aftershave for the blue-collar working man. Its popularity began to wane in the late 1960’s when the Hippy movement and facial hair came into vogue.

It’s still widely available in the USA and can be found in drugstores, some discount stores, and Walmart. Unfortunately, it’s only available in plastic bottles, which does adversely affect the scent.

There’s no cologne to accompany the aftershave.

Even if you don’t like the scent, it’s an inexpensive aftershave with very little tenacity that will soothe irritated skin. Give it a few minutes to settle and follow it up with the cologne of your choice.

The Opening

Aqua Velva Blue is an aromatic aquatic fragrance that opens with a huge blast of alcohol. Within seconds, the slightly sweet-smelling menthol comes through. The opening moves swiftly into the dry down.

The Dry Down

Within 15 minutes, this turns into a skin scent that’s clean-smelling, powdery, and minty with little sillage. There’s a faint hint of lavender lurking underneath all the menthol.

Most of the listed notes for this fragrance are unidentifiable. Perhaps a better nose than mine could spot them.

The scent will be gone in less than 1 hour, but it is an aftershave. It’s not meant to last. Its purpose is to soothe freshly shaven skin, which it does well.

Is Aqua Velva Ice Blue Vegan?

There’s only 1 ingredient in Aqua Velva Blue that might be of concern: glycerin.

Glycerin can be either plant- or animal-derived. The glycerin source for Aqua Velva Blue is unknown.

The purpose of the glycerin is to offset the drying effect of the alcohol. It’ll keep your skin from getting too dry, but it’s not a good skin moisturizer by itself. If you’re prone to dry skin, you’ll need to use an additional moisturizer.

It’s unknown if Aqua Velva Ice Blue is vegan.

Is Aqua Velva Ice Blue Cruelty Free?

Combe Incorporated has chosen to not make its animal-testing policy public. Secrecy is often an indicator that a company is not cruelty free. Unless the company makes a public statement, it’s best to assume that Combe Inc. is not cruelty free.

Sales of Aqua Velva in Europe are handled by Unilever, which is not a cruelty-free company.

From Unilever’s website:

Our leading-edge approach has one clear purpose: to continue to develop, apply and let others know about the research we do to guarantee that our products are safe, without the need for animal testing.”

And also this:

Occasionally, across our wider product portfolio, some of the ingredients we use have to be tested by our suppliers to comply with legal and regulatory requirements in some markets; and some governments still test certain products on animals as part of their regulations.”

Unilever seems to be striving for a worldwide ban on animal testing, but the company is currently(2022) not completely cruelty free.

Aqua Velva Ice Blue is possibly not cruelty free.
